Subject: Ariadne Capital Journal Volume1 Edition3 / Bluetooth Article
Dear Editor,
I read with interest, as usual, the recent issue of the Ariadne Capital Journal.
May I respectfully suggest that the article on Bluetooth would have had a higher
degree of credibility if it had taken on more directly thee competitive
positioning of Bluetooth versus 802.11b wireless Ethernet.
While I am not sure I would fully subscribe to Bill Gurleys arguments [in his
article “Bye, Bye, Bluetooth” (CNET, 13-08-01)] regarding the eclipsing of
Bluetooth by 802.11b, his arguments are best not ignored.
In the Bluetooth article in the Journal, I did not find 802.1 lb mentioned by
name, though perhaps the author included it with his reference to “wireless
LAN”.
I would add a personal datum to the prospects for Bluetooth, at least in the PC
space, that might be of interest. The current thinking at Phoenix Technologies
on whose Board I sit, is that Bluetooth has lost its momentum as an interconnect
technology in the PC world. Bluetooth is showing up with decreasing frequency as
a design consideration or specification in the deals Phoenix is seeing. For the
record, Phoenix IP shipped on about 85 million new PC devices or appliances in
2001 so they have a pretty good perspective on what is happening in the device
world EXCLUDING mobile phones where they have little penetration.
The Bluetooth play may be concentrated in the phone world, which is substantial,
but in the office world, Bluetooth will be in great competition with
802,11b...or so it seems to me.
Anyway, a more overt treatment of Bluetooth’s principal competitor 802.11b may
have added some useful balance and value to the piece in the Ariadne Journal,
from the readers perspective.
