The Global Telecom Women's Network (GTWN) launched its Broadband Content
Initiative at a GTWN forum discussion moderated by Janice Hughes,
CEO and Founder of Spectrum Strategy Consultants and GTWN Global
Steering Committee Member. The Forum, held in London on November 13, was hosted by Ashurst Morris
Crisp, the international law firm.
"At a time
when network providers and governments, have invested an enormous amount
of money into mobile and fixed Broadband networks, the industry must
meet the challenge of ensuring that there is enough compelling content
and applications, to create sustained and real value for the user and to
allow a proper return on investment for the financial investors",
declared Hughes. "We have today launched the 'GTWN Broadband
Initiative' to highlight the issues regarding this challenge. We have
gathered an impressive group of telco operators such as BT, Freeserve,
Verizon, World Space, Europe Online.
As well as content providers such
as TWI Interactive, Arrivo on Demand, and financial, regulating and
enabling groups such as the Deutsche Bank, Ariadne Capital, Convergys,
A.T. Kearney, Spectrum Strategy, and the US International Trade
Commission to try and provide solutions and answers to these
challenges."
After a
hefty discussion on "Which Business Model will work for Broadband
Content?", and "Who is going to pay for what", as well as exploring if
operating platforms such as BSkyB are gateways or gatekeepers.
The GTWN
Forum retained the following principles for creating a
win-win position
for Broadband Content Platform Operators and Providers:
1.
More education about what Broadband Communications can bring
to the consumer.
2.
Branding and Public Relations Campaigns about and with
Broadband.
3.
Mixing of traditional and new medias to facilitate profitable
and efficient business models for broadband.
4.
Complementary exploitation of content over different
platforms resulting in targeted, profiled content for targeted markets.
