Product Review - Hardware
By Oliver Stickley, Technical Operations Manager,  Ariadne Capital

DV2 Camcorder player

Advantages
• Very easy to use
• Quick software installation
• Quick picture downloads
• Additional memory slots

Disadvantages
• No built in flash
• Viewer slightly too dark

The DV2 Camcorder player looks like a normal camcorder but is about half the size and weighs only 123g.  Is a great product for anybody who likes to capture the moment (still or video) at anytime, but does not have a vast knowledge of the technology.  The product is small enough to fit in your pocket or handbag and includes a USB lead for downloading your clips and pictures, a driver CD-ROM, a mini tripod and a wrist tie.

Set-up
The
DV2 Camcorder player "plug and plays" into your computer's USB port and comes with an easy to install driver on one CD-ROM. This is compatible with various computer operating systems including Windows and the MAC OS.

The easy to follow, step-by-step manual in different languages is also not too thick to put you off reading it!

Aesthetics
The camcorder certainly looks like a camcorder and generally is nicely formed, although the view finder looks as though it was an after thought.  But for about £100, it looks pretty good.

Product testing
Generally the DV2 is easy to use, but the "icon only", no words menu system takes a while to get used to.  Instead of using tape, the DV2  records onto its own 16-megabyte internal memory...The digital camera can store 80 pictures and up to 2 mins of footage.  Its own internal memory can be added to with further memory cards in the onboard slot,  giving you more space for more pictures.  There is no flash unit on the camera, which would be useful, but I found I not essential, as you can edit the photo on your PC.

The DV2 offers full video, still image capturing (1.3 mega pixel) and audio recording, it also can serve as a webcam directly linked to your PC.

Navigating through your pictures before you transfer them can be difficult, but with the system software it comes with it is easy to pick the ones you want and copy them directly to your hard drive.  It is also possible to review and delete your pictures though the small display on the camera.  This allows unwanted picture to be deleted, freeing up valuable memory.
