Intamac, a UK firm based in Northampton, is creating a new level of peace of mind when it comes to worrying about your home and family. Delivering the promise of the Digital Home, Intamac is revolutionizing the traditional alarm system market.

Alarm systems are about offering peace of mind – but traditionally they come at a high price and in the form of a stand-alone installation with limited functionality (make noise, phone police).

Intamac is addressing the broader need for peace of mind and the opportunity for social monitoring. For example, why not use the alarm sensors to send you a SMS when your children come home from school? Why not use it for checking whether the cleaning lady is going through your personal belongings? Why not combine it with a cheap web camera to create a CCTV system that archives images on-line instead of on VCR tapes? Why not send an alert to a sequence of neighbors before bringing in the police to respond to an alarm.  Customers of Intamac even use their systems to view if the local property broker is organizing viewings when they are absent from their vacation property in Spain.

Many of the systems required to create these diverse scenario’s are not designed to work with each other (e.g. a webcam or a flood sensor doesn’t send an SMS) and that’s where Intamac’s technology comes in. Intamac has created a ‘multi-functional jack’ residing in the internet, to which users can connect any of their devices so that they can talk to each other. Signals and events can flow between devices, triggering actions such as emails, SMS, voicemails, etc…

Users can access their digital home through a simple web browser. From there, they can view what’s happened and in what sequence. They can view images from cameras or configure who will be alerted, when and how. This flexibility allows users to create the peace of mind such as they want it. It’s a revolutionary new way compared to pre-configured alarm boxes on the wall offered to date.

By architecting the service based on Internet technologies, Intamac is also able to offer this at a fraction of the cost of a traditional alarm system and monitoring package. At £129 for the box and £5/month for the service, now everyone can afford home security. Key fob

With households embracing broadband and internet-based multi-media, the opportunity for Intamac is huge as the number of connected devices keeps growing. Major vendors ranging from Intel to Whirlpool are investing the digital home, creating an exciting digital future for our old bricks.  Click here to find out how you can sign up at www.bt.com/homemonitoring.

Ariadne has been advising Intamac on funding and business development since summer 2003.
