Skype - The Breakout VoIP Product

jvtv logo
Skype, the Global P2P Telephony Company is changing the telecommunications world by offering consumers free, unlimited, superior-quality calling worldwide over the Internet via its free, feature-rich Skype software. Skype is the first P2P (peer-to-peer) Internet telephony software.

Skype was created by Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, founders of KaZaA-- the world’s most popular Internet software. Skype is a privately held company whose investors include Tim Draper, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Index Ventures, Bessemer Venture Partners, and Mangrove Capital Partners. Skype Technologies SA is headquartered in Luxembourg and is growing with personnel in London and soon in Tallinn.

Since launching on 29th August 2003 Skype has more than 6 million registered users. Skype Beta 0.98 furthers the unique feature set that has made Skype the breakout VOIPcategory product. Skype is currently offered in 20 languages from more than 170 countries. Skype is averaging approximately 1 new user registration every 3 seconds.

Skype engaged Ariadne Capital’s corporate advisory team earlier this year to assist with the development of the London office and to provide access to our network for strategic partnerships across a range of business development activities.

After a hugely successful CeBIT, that saw the announcement of two new preferred partners (www.skype.com/partners_preferred.html), Skype has gone on to release a PDA version, called PocketSkype, is launching a new feature called SkypeOut that enables Skype calls to traditional phone numbers, plus Linux and Mac versions are expected this summer.
