Tunecast II FM Transmitter - £27
By Diana Nye

I
originally bought the analogue Tunecast FM Transmitter
to stream my iPod through my car's audio system. After
downloading 4000+ songs on my iPod, I wanted the payback
of being able to listen to it in the car. No more organising
CD's in advance of a roadtrip - I now have my entire
CD collection at my disposal.
I bought my second Tunecast, the digital Tunecast II,
after my favourite US alternative rock station (WFNX-
Boston!) started streaming over the internet. I've subsequently
found my college radio station, have subscribed to the
NFL.com premium service to listen to American football
over the web, and frequently use it to listen to the
BBC World Service and listen on demand programmes on
Radio 4.
I had been pleasantly surprised with the ease of use
and portability of the original unit, but the upgraded
Tunecast II exceeded my expectations and was well worth
the extra £10! First, the sound quality is amazing.
In fact - it's as good as the radio I'm broadcasting
through - which in my house means a Sony and a Bose.
The digital tuner gives you complete flexibility in
identifying the optimum channel for broadcast, and the
30 foot range means that you can easily broadcast through
multiple radios.
The Tunecast works with iPod's, PDA's,MP3 players, CD
walkman, and PC's to broadcast audio through any FM
stereo receiver. Because it's about the size of a cigarette
lighter and about as heavy, it's a great gadget for
travelling as it can be squeezed into the carrying case
of whatever device you want to use it with and is a
great antidote for rental cars and hotel audio.
The only downside to the unit is that it's really designed
to be used in the car, and the power source is either
a couple of AAA batteries or the in-car charger. The
batteries are good for about 30 hours of continuous
play. I bought an in-car charger to mains transformer
to save on batteries, but that's been less than successful,
but that's another product review.
