ETRE 2005 - Julie Meyer in Athens for the
European Technology Roundtable

Where were you October 16-19, 2005? The entrepreneurs and investors in Europe and North America were hanging out in Athens at ETRE. ETRE - http://www.etre05.com/etre/index.jsp - is the meeting place for the high-tech, high-growth companies in Europe. Take it from a woman who knows “meeting places” – this is one not to miss. After DAVOS, and maybe even before DAVOS, ETRE is it, and I don’t get paid to say that.

Alex Vieux – the founder of ETRE – is an original, and many of the world’s most valuable companies have wanted him on their Boards. Check out these links to the man who makes ETRE happen each year:

I’ve met the most wonderful people at ETRE. It all started in October 1999 when I ventured to my first ETRE which was in Monte Carlo that year. I remember figuring out who Alex was, and going over to him to introduce myself. In vintage Alex style he responded to my “Hi I’m Julie” line with a “I know who you are” accompanied by a big smile. I’ve felt at home ever since, and have not missed an ETRE since.

Last year Bill Gates addressed the ETRE crowd one evening, and every year Alex manages to get the people who are in the midst of a big deal or just have completed one to grace the stages of ETRE. This year Niklas Zennstrom who had just completed a $4 bn sale of SKYPE to Ebay explained the trek that he made from unfunded start-up in 2002 to major home-run. Zennstrom said that he never considered themselves merely a European company, but a global one that happened to be built out of Europe. More European start-ups ought to think this way.

Tim Draper - http://www.dfj.com/team/tim_bio.shtml - is at ETRE every year, and as many of you know, has a poem for every occasion. His SKYPE poem may have topped last year’s Christmas poem for best read. What’s wonderful about ETRE is to see instances such as the one where Alex tells Tim what to do: “sit down Tim; you run your fund; I run my conference”.

You get what you pay for, and ETRE is not cheap, but if you want to engage with high-growth Europe, block out mid October for Barcelona next year.
