VideoEgg: Universal Adapter for Posting, Editing
& Watching Videos Online
By Jenny Levitan
The constantly growing diversity of online content formats and proliferation of personal and professional blogs in particular, demands that the process of uploading information is quick and uncomplicated. With this in mind, the simple "copy/paste" function, which works great on text and pictures, is useless with digital video.
Apart from the time it takes to upload a video on a website, you need to worry about the video format compatibility of the source and the video player, the encoding, the extra software that a viewer may need to watch it…
Well, not anymore! VideoEgg, a company
based in New Haven CT, has created VideoEgg Publisher - a new solution
that will allow the user to make video web-posting as easy as frying an
egg! VideoEgg Publisher is a lightweight browser
extension,
which makes it truly simple for end-users to capture, edit, encode, unload
and watch digital video online, without worrying about player compatibilities.
The solution is a universal adapter that captures digital videos directly
from many different devices and reads dozens of formats. Posting a video
is as easy as posting a jpeg. Using this system, videos are immediately
available for viewing online through the Flash-based VideoEgg Player,
a "player-less" solution that does not require the overhead of external
players like Windows Media and QuickTime.
The VideoEgg website has a live demo page where you can try the product. You can upload (or simply drag) your video on to their webpage from a file, a camcorder, a webcam or a mobile phone. I tested it myself to see how truly easy and fast it is: it took 6 minutes to upload a 2.7 MB Windows Media Video file. I think it's pretty good, considering that as soon as you've done that, your video can be easily posted and viewed regardless the player format. Generally, the interface of the VideoEgg Publisher is very user-friendly, it's quite easy to find your way around it; it also has a step-by-step help section.
This version of the VideoEgg Publisher was recently released at the DEMOfall Conference in California, an invite-only showcase considered one of the world's premier forums for new technology innovations. Industry guru Chris Shipley, executive producer of the DEMO Conferences, said, "The VideoEgg Publisher makes online video posting simple for everyday Internet users, providing a powerful new feature for communities and services across the Web. By simplifying Internet video publishing to a drag-and-drop process, VideoEgg removes key barriers to mass consumer adoption of the video medium."
The list of potential uses for this solution is endless, including: adding life to personal profiles for dating and social-networking services; enriching online auction postings with product presentations; sharing home movies with friends and family; submitting multimedia projects and reports for school and work; augmenting applications to schools, jobs and programs; spicing up personal websites, emails and blogs!
