James Essinger – Principal, Da Vinci Public Relations – www.davincipr.com

James was born in 1957 in Leicester and educated at Wiggeston Boys’ Grammar School and Lincoln College, Oxford, where he studied English Language & Literature. He spent three years after university teaching English in Finland, where he learned to speak Finnish fluently, and has travelled extensively around the world. James began his career as a writer and PR consultant in 1984 and became self-employed in 1988.

To date, James has published more than thirty business books, including Eastern European Banking, The Future of Banking, Managing Technology in Financial Institutions, Electronic Payment Systems, The Seven Deadly Skills of Competing, The Financial Times Handbook of Investment Management and Breakthrough Consulting. His business books have been translated into Italian, German, Polish, Japanese and Chinese.

In 2004, James published his first general trade non-fiction book: Jacquard’s Web, which tells the story of how the computer originated in the Jacquard silk-weaving loom that was invented by Joseph-Marie Jacquard in the early nineteenth century. In March 2006, James’s second general trade book will be published. This is Spellbound, a popular account of the story of how English spelling evolved. James has also recently completed a novel, The Pirate Queen of Manchester Square.

Throughout this time of writing a variety of books, James has also been running his public relations consultancy. He began working with Helen Wylie in 1996, and in 2001 they formed Da Vinci Public Relations from their existing PR consultancy.

Da Vinci Public Relations

Da Vinci Public Relations is a public relations consultancy that specialises in winning print and broadcast media coverage for clients involved in ‘cerebral’ business areas where normal corporate advertising is unlikely to be effective. Da Vinci bases much of its activity on close and focused liaison with journalists on national newspapers and the editors of high-profile professional and trade journals.  Much of Da Vinci’s output consists of ghost-writing ‘thoughtpiece’ articles that are published under the clients name and which position the client as an expert and authority on a certain area of professional activity. Da Vinci’s clients are involved in all the following areas:

  1. banking
  2. business strategy and consultancy
  3. financial services
  4. technology
  5. venture capital

Many of Da Vinci’s clients have been with the firm for more than five years.
